What seeds to give garden birds?

If you have a garden, you may want certain birds to visit it... Helping them find food is a good solution. You'll be doing a good deed in winter when food in nature is scarcer. And you'll enjoy their pleasant company! To do this, offer them suitable food that will attract them. Find out which seeds to choose for garden birds.

Why feed garden birds?

Feeding garden birds helps them get through the winter more comfortably. As soon as the first big chills arrive, the food they find in nature becomes scarce: insects, larvae, fruits, seeds.

Birds expend a lot of energy fighting the cold and looking for food. As days are shorter in winter, the time spent searching for food is also reduced. They therefore need to find an energy-rich diet, which includes seeds.

It is recommended not to start feeding the birds in your garden too early so that they remain self-sufficient in their search for food for as long as possible. Prepare the feeders when it starts to snow or when the temperature is around 0°C.

Depending on where you live, bird feeding will not start at the same time. In cold regions, you will start around mid-October. In warm regions, it will be more in November.

Bird food for the garden

Generally speaking, choose raw, unsalted seeds. Salt can indeed lead to health problems in birds.

As far as possible, opt for organic seeds that have not been exposed to chemical treatments. It is also advisable to mix several types of seeds rather than offering just one. Each type of seed will bring its own benefits to the birds!

Ground-feeding birds

Ground-feeding birds enjoy wheat and barley seeds as well as cracked corn. Sunflower seeds are suitable for both ground-feeding birds and those that prefer feeders.

Also consider Safflower seeds. Sparrows, buntings, and doves will also enjoy millet and finger millet seeds.

Birds that eat from feeders

Two types of seeds are widely used to feed garden birds and are suitable for many species. These are sunflower seeds and oat groats. Oat groats (or hulled oats) are whole oat grains without their husks.

Millet and finger millet seeds are well-suited for accentors, goldfinches, and greenfinches.

Goldfinches, tits, and nuthatches particularly enjoy poppy seeds. Mix them with other types of seeds.

Other seeds are very common in seed mixes, often combined with more nutritious seeds. These include canary seeds, hemp seeds, rapeseed, and poppy seeds. They attract, among others, crossbills, goldfinches, tits, nuthatches, and siskins.

Nyjer seeds are small and black. Most garden birds like them: accentors, goldfinches, greenfinches, and siskins.

Peanuts are also good food for many birds. You should offer them shelled and crushed (naturally unsalted). Robins, in particular, are very fond of them.

Tits, woodpeckers, and nuthatches will be delighted to find almonds and hazelnuts in the feeders!
